So far, 2024 is proving to be a year of tension, difficulty, and heartache around the globe. Uncertain times, for sure. We’ve seen news reports of war, extreme weather, worldwide and domestic political unrest, and last week, the shocking attempted assassination of one of the candidates for President of the United States.
It’s a time of great uncertainty and trepidation. But there’s good news. Amid all uncertainty and fear in recent times, one thing is certain—Jesus Christ is Lord.
For those who know this already, it is a good time to pause, reflect, and pray. A time to recenter ourselves and recalibrate our minds. Shocking and difficult events have a tendency to spur this type of reckoning in all people. However, it should especially be so for Christ’s followers.
A message of hope, grace, and peace is what this uncertain and hurting world needs. I’d like to offer some scriptural truths to encourage you. The most oft-made command in the Bible is some iteration of “do not be afraid.” Uncertainty is one fuel on which fear feasts, so sharing words of hope about the sovereignty and capability of God seems fitting today.
We serve a God far more complex than this world, so complex that He is called by many names. These are only a few of them:
El Shaddai (God Almighty)
So do not fear, for I am with you;
Isaiah 41:10 (NIV)
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Jehovah Mephalti (God our Deliverer)
I sought the Lord, and he answered me
Psalm 34:4
and delivered me from all my fears.
Prince of Peace
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
John 14:27 (NIV)
Good Shepherd
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
Psalm 23:4 (ESV)
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
Jehovah Ezrah (God my Helper)
For I, the Lord your God,
Isaiah 41:13 (ESV)
hold your right hand;
it is I who say to you, “Fear not,
I am the one who helps you.”
Jehovah Maschi (God my Refuge)
Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me,
Psalm 57:1 (NIV)
for in you I take refuge.
I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings
until the disaster has passed.
In these uncertain times of trial and unrest, let’s choose to look to our more-than-able God. Praise Him! For He saves us, upholds us, protects us, and grants us peace. Lord, help us keep our eyes fixed on You and to turn to You with all our fears and for all our needs. In Jesus’ name, AMEN.

Following and while grieving the
death of my mother, I’ve now gone to
the brink of a Myasthenic physical
crisis – drooped eyes and double
vision, difficulty swallowing, and
shortness of breath. It all seems like
too much, and yes, I feel afraid. Thank
you for these timely words and
reminders. Jill
Praying for you, sweet friend. God is more than able.
Beautiful and powerful reminders of Who is
on the throne. We need not fear!
Yes and amen!
Yes ElShaddai also know as the God who is more than enough. In other
words, if I don’t have it I’ll make it for you and He can because He is the
Great Creator. That said, we can rise above the places that cause us worry
and fear, doubt and unbelief and trust in the Great I AM.
May God’s best always be yours in Jesus Name, amen.
Thank you for your kind words and for reading. He is good.
