Scripture and a Song: Thankful

SONG: Really? How can it be Thanksgiving Week already? The weather belies the season – nearly 70 in the Mid-Atlantic US on Saturday. But Sunday, a cold front comes and with it, a swell of thankfulness in my heart. To enumerate my blessings is impossible because God has been so very good to me. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I’ve chosen one of my favorite songs from some time ago – Thankful by Caedmon’s Call. I love this song because it addresses my personal sentiments of thankfulness for God’s hand in my life. It’s not just that He has blessed me, but that only through Him am I able to navigate life and bless others.

No, there is none righteous
Not one who understands
There is none who seek God
No not one, no not one

I am thankful that I’m incapable
Of doing any good on my own…

thankful

SCRIPTURE: In John 15:4-5, Jesus relates a beautiful image of how the relationship between God and His people works. We are fruitful in life when we are connected to Him. Apart from Him, we are weak and ineffective. But oh, to cling to Him and abide in His presence – this is the source of all strength.

Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

And so it is with me. Without my Heavenly Father, I am unable to do anything meaningful on my own, much less anything good. My own effort is not enough – but His grace is. I am so very thankful to Him that He is the source of all my strength, victory, provision, hope, peace…and much more. No good thing comes from me, but rather flows through me as a result of His outpouring of goodness when I abide in Him. What an amazing privilege!

PRAYER: My dearest Lord, to stop and ponder the blessings you’ve graced me with is overwhelming. I thank you and dwell in an attitude of thankfulness, remembering your lavish sacrifice for me, and receiving the life of abundance You desire to give me. Apart from you I can do no good thing, and I am grateful for your empowering love every day. I will give thanks daily and seek to bring You glory in all I do. In the name of Jesus, my portion and hope, AMEN.
