Scripture and a Song: Indescribable

SONG: All year I’ve been excited for the weekend when we go camping at Worlds End State Park in Pennsylvania. It was this weekend! We stayed in a rustic cabin built in the 1930’s and enjoyed the impossibly starry skies, waterfall views, mountain vistas, fresh air, quiet evenings by the fire and the inexplicable peace of being out in Creation together. One of the most profound ways in which I commune with God is when I get the chance to be in the great outdoors and admire His handiwork. Chris Tomlin’s Indescribable captures the very emotion I feel when I am out in nature. God’s amazing creativity and power are simply indescribable.

SCRIPTURE: I have two scriptures this week that speak to the creative majesty of the Lord. In the book of Amos, we get a glimpse:

He who forms the mountains, who creates the wind, and who reveals his thoughts to mankind, who turns dawn to darkness, and treads on the heights of the earth– the LORD God Almighty is his name. Amos 4:13 (NIV)

Tomlin references Psalm 147:4 in the song also:

He counts the stars and calls them all by name. (NLT)

What I love so much about these verses isn’t just that God is so mighty in His creative power. I also love that He “reveals his thoughts to mankind” and knows the stars “by name”. He is a personal God. Though so magnificent and powerful, He cares for each of us and knows us by name as well. We are unique and important to Him. Simply look at nature and see the tenderness and care with which He crafted the heavens and the earth. It is no mere accident – but the design of a loving Father who also formed us in our mothers’ wombs.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, Creation sings your praises. The mighty mountains, rushing waterfalls, delicate autumn leaves and vast expanse of stars all tell a love story. Thank you for speaking to us through nature and for holding the universe in balance within Your mighty hand. Your works are marvelous and your love is so personal and tender towards us. All praise and honor to your holy name. AMEN.
