Scripture and a Song – Cornerstone

SONG: This week’s song is Cornerstone (Live) by Hillsong Worship. In a world full of so much uncertainty and turmoil, we can often find ourselves feeling afraid and unsure about the future. Violence, greed and disaster seem to rage around us, the destructive results of mankind’s pride. Hillsong captures the heart of who Jesus is – The Cornerstone, the Foundation on which we can build our faith. He is The Anchor – the One we can cling to when the tempest rages around us. He provides the hope and surety the world so desperately needs right now. When we place our trust in Him, He steadies us and can bring peace to our hearts.

Christ Alone, Cornerstone

SCRIPTURE: The idea of Christ being called the Cornerstone originates in Isaiah 28:16, which reads:

“Therefore, this is what the Sovereign LORD says: ‘Look! I am placing a foundation stone in Jerusalem, a firm and tested stone. It is a precious cornerstone that is safe to build on.Whoever believes need never be shaken.’ ” (NLT)

This scripture is echoed in 1 Peter 2:6 and Ephesians 2:20. In both, Jesus is referred to as the Cornerstone. The original reference in Isaiah is considered an allusion to the Messiah. Jesus is in fact the Cornerstone of Christianity, the foundation of our belief. The promise that “Whoever believes will not be shaken” is one that we need in our world and in our individual lives. May you place Him as the foundation of your life and not be shaken, no matter what comes your way.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, thank you for being a “firm and tested” foundation I can trust. You are certain and sure and have promised to hold me tightly as life’s trials come. Help me put my faith wholly in you, not in my own abilities or the things of this world. In your Precious Name, AMEN.
