SONG: Blessed Assurance is an old hymn I remember from growing up at Central Baptist Church. My grandparents took us to church and this was one of my favorites. The swell of the pipe organ and the voices lifted up in song are a pleasant source of nostalgia for me. This hymn was written by Fanny Crosby in 1873. It surprised me to find out from www.sharefaith.com that Crosby, despite becoming blind shortly after her birth, wrote over 8,000 hymns in her lifetime. The popular lyrics read:
Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
O what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.
This version is by Elevation Worship. They do a great job of exposing a new generation to this beloved old hymn.
SCRIPTURE: A related scripture to this is found in Titus 2:12-13:
“Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ…”
The life of faith in Jesus is a twofold blessing. We can enjoy the peace and “blessed assurance” of God’s hand upon us as we walk through our earthly lives. We also get to have a “foretaste of glory divine”, the confidence that there is something coming, that God has prepared a place for us after this life has passed. We are blessedly assured that we will either see Him appear at His Second Coming or meet with Him when He calls us home. How can we keep from singing when we consider all He has done for us and what it will mean to meet Him face to face?
PRAYER: Sweet Lord Jesus, I am blessed and humbled by the assurance you give me day to day in my life. I am also amazed by the fact that you are personally preparing a place for me in Heaven. Thank you for your gift of salvation and your promises that are always in my favor. In the matchless name of Jesus, AMEN.

Thank you for writing on this. And for
compiling a sweet cover of the favored
hymn by a favored artist.
I found your blog as I was pulling up to my
house & asking a prayer for a friend. I
couldn’t quite put into words what I was
wanting them to have.. and then it came to
me that the best way to describe it would
be my yearning for them to have “blessed
assurance” -the sweetest gift one could
receive on this earth we inhabit.
Of course, being the curious person &
lover of scripture that I am, I had to google
“what is blessed assurance?” I’m curious
how you would describe this
unfathomable mystery of His gift to us.
For me it’s the assurance of “Fatherly love”
& “daughter” as who I am… meaning you,
friend are my sister & will one day share
praises together.
I hope you are well this Christmas season.
Hi, Tracy.
Thank you for explaining this song. After
my dad was buried. The next morning, as
my family gathered to pray , the Lord
revealed this song to us to assure us that
my dad is in Heaven. Our Lord Jesus truly
loves each and everyone of his children.
Thank you for this wonderful reminder of God’s assurance to His people!
Blessings to you,
Felecia
Dear Ann,
So loved your comments on this great hymn.
It is sad that many people miss out on experiencing that Blessed Assurance that we as
