Scripture and a Song: Jesus Messiah

SONG: The 2016 election for President of the United States is this week. I’ve remained largely silent on the issue online because I don’t want my blog to politicize when it is meant to glorify God. Americans seem to be largely dissatisfied, both with their candidate choices and with the political process itself. Of greater concern is the way people have been speaking to and about one another during this race. It deeply grieves my heart to see, hear and read about it. But there is hope! I have chosen the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir’s Jesus Messiah for a couple of reasons.  The name of Jesus is the Name Above All Names. He is above all political candidates, political parties and failings of society. He is the hope of this world, Lord of All. I love this version because it is a beautiful song of praise, with people of every race and background lifting their voices to Him. The unity captured in this video is profound and should be a reflection of the church of Christ. Regardless of denomination, race, class or location, the church should be elevating Him above all, especially above our own political leanings. We should unite and spend more time in prayer for our leaders and our country than we do promoting our chosen candidates, or tearing the others down. God is on the throne and He will hear our petitions on behalf of this land. Pray for your elected leaders on Wednesday, November 9, whether or not you voted for them. It is our responsibility to do so. name-above-all-names

SCRIPTURE: Philippians 2:9-11 reminds the reader that no matter the earthly leadership, Jesus is the Lord of all.

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,

that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

(NIV)

As a follower of Christ Jesus, it is encouraging to remember that whatever the outcome of this difficult election cycle, He is above all. He is a God of love, mercy, unity and peace. Regardless of who is in the White House, I know my real hope is in Him, who lives in my Heavenly Father’s house and is preparing a place there for me.

PRAYER: Sweet Lord Jesus, You are above all things, the Name Above all Names. Despite the politics of this world, you rule and reign in love and mercy. I pray for our country and all elected leaders, regardless of whether I align with their politics. Give them wisdom to do the important jobs they have been elected to do. Help me to remember that You are the Sovereign One. Thank you for your steadfast love and that You always make good on Your promises. In Your name I pray, AMEN.
