Second Sunday Song: Hosanna

SONG: It’s Palm Sunday! Holy Week begins now and I am sharing a song this week that has been immensely powerful in my life. God used this song to speak specific truth to my heart three years ago. At the time I didn’t understand it, but He is slowly revealing it to me by the way He is transforming my life since my back injury last year. You can read more about my injury and God’s use of this trial HERE. The song is Hosanna by Hillsong United. The word “hosanna” actually means “save now”. Every day, I need saving. Hosanna, Lord Jesus!

SCRIPTURE: Hosanna is an exclamation of faith and adoration, famously shouted at Jesus as He entered Jerusalem at the Triumphal Entry. This is recorded in all four gospels, with this account coming from Matthew 21:6-9. In this account, we learn why many churches distribute palms on what is known as Palm Sunday.

The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and placed their cloaks on it for Jesus to sit on.  A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,

“Hosanna to the Son of David!”

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

Jesus was greeted by an adoring crowd, but only days later, He was betrayed and crucified. This is what makes us shout “hosanna” still today – He is powerful and can save the souls of all who trust in Him. His sacrifice and resurrection is a mighty demonstration of His power and love.

PRAYER: Dearest Jesus, You are the Lord of all, the King of Kings. HOSANNA! Save now…daily save me from myself, from the world, from the Enemy. May I be so in awe of Your majesty that I am always calling out Hosanna. I give my life, my love, my honor, my dreams, my hopes, my pain all to You. You are Lord of it all. HOSANNA! In Jesus’ mighty name I pray, AMEN.
