SONG: For King and Country’s “Fix My Eyes” is this week’s song. I returned to work as a teacher this week and it is always a difficult time for me because I feel like I am pulled in more directions than I can possibly go. So much is expected of me and I have all my personal business to take care of as well. Tending to my family, home and self becomes much more complicated. Caring for and helping my students can be exhausting. This song reminds the listeners to fix their eyes on Jesus, asking Him for strength to do each day’s work.
SCRIPTURE: The scripture connected to this song is from the book of Hebrews. In chapter 12, verses 1-2, the text speaks of persisting in the race of life by focusing on Jesus, the source of all strength. It is one of my favorite images in scripture:
..let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith – who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (NASB)
Life is referred to as a race that we must run with endurance. The school year definitely feels this way. Lost, hurt and confused students need support. All of them need a safe environment and quality lessons to help them develop academically. My children and husband need my attention. This scripture’s reassurance that I can do it is so encouraging. I am capable of overlooking the obstacles and frustrations of life to serve God. I can run the race. To give, to serve, to stand up for what is right – these are all things I can do with His help. I will fix my eyes, press in and focus relentlessly on Him who makes me able.
PRAYER: Dearest Lord, You know my heart. You know the things of this life that distract me and bog me down. You know the responsibilities I bear. Draw me to Yourself. Help me to fix my eyes on You and what Your perfect will is for me. Show me how to serve you. I pray that the things of this world would grow dim as I look to You. Help me to run the race with endurance and to serve You wholeheartedly. In Jesus’ mighty name, AMEN.
