Scripture and a Song: Noel

SONG: I can’t stop listening to Noel by Lauren Daigle. It’s SO good. It’s also a song many may not have heard before, a more contemporary Christmas song. What makes it so cool is that it is kind of like a worship song. Daigle’s passion is so evident and powerful when she sings. And the lyrics…the lyrics!

Noel, Noel
Come and see what God has done
Noel, Noel
The story of amazing love!
The light of the world, given for us
Noel

The word noel means Christmas in French, and is further traced back to the Latin for “birth” or “birthday” (natalis). It is used in this song and in the familiar carol “The First Noel” to be an announcement of birth – the most important birth in all of history. Glad tidings of the birth of Jesus are often expressed using the word. Indeed this song does the same.

SCRIPTURE: In Daigle’s song, the lyrics include the familiar phrase “unto us a child is born”, as made most famous in Handel’s Messiah. The scripture associated with this is a prophetic word from the book of Isaiah about the birth of the Messiah.

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6

The birth of Jesus is a story of love, of hope, of redemption. Truly, an amazing act of love. NOEL!

PRAYER: Father God, thank you for the gift of Your Son. His birth changed everything. Help me to hold Christmas in my heart as a time of celebration of Your love. Your majesty is overwhelming to me. I thank you for being wonderful, mighty, everlasting and the source of my peace. In Jesus’ name, AMEN.
