Scripture and a Song – 10,000 Reasons

SONG: Matt Redman’s 10,000 Reasons is this week’s song. It is an anthem to the everlasting love and kindness of God, focusing on His unchangeable nature. Despite our changeable attitudes and behavior, we can be assured that every morning, His mercies are new. Further, He is always working on our behalf. Forgiveness, healing, blessing, peace and love are all the benefits He freely bestows upon us. This song of praise not only celebrates the goodness of God now, but anticipates the eternal bliss we will experience upon meeting Him face to face. Redmond captures this thought as he sings “Still my soul will sing Your praise unending, ten thousand years and then forevermore.”

bless the lord

SCRIPTURE: Redman’s inspiration for this song comes from Psalm 103, in which the Psalmist David is overwhelmed with joy and gratitude:

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
    bless his holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits,
who forgives all your iniquity,
    who heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

Psalms 103:1-5 ESV

Remember who David is – King David of Israel, former giant-slaying shepherd boy. A blessed man indeed. But also, he was at one time a sinful man, having had an affair with another man’s wife, then ordering her husband killed. Yet David is called “a man after God’s own heart”.  Despite his failings, David repented and was reconciled to God, enjoying not only full forgiveness, but a restoration of heart and spirit. The life of David shows us that no matter what we have done, we can be reconciled to a loving Heavenly Father who desires to lavish us with all the good things He is capable of giving. The only thing stopping that reconciliation is our failure to reach out to Him. And even more wonderful is that He actively desires to restore and show favor to us. He gives us so many reasons to praise Him. Reach for Him today and be made whole, looking towards the abundant life and eternity He wants to give.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank you for your relentless and reliable love. No matter how I feel, you are constant and kind. Thank you that you are the giver of every good thing and that your forgiveness and mercy are accessible to me, no matter what I have done or left undone. You are good and kind and I receive your love and praise you for who You are. I bless Your name and ask You to draw me close so that I may know you more. In the name of Jesus, AMEN.
