Scripture and a Song: How Great Thou Art

SONG: I grew up in a Baptist Church where we had a piano, an organ and old-school hymns to offer worship to God. These swelling songs of adoration are embedded in my heart, connecting me to happy memories of my grandparents, who were largely responsible for my spiritual education. They shared Jesus with me and I credit them both with living godly lives that demonstrated God’s love in action. One of my favorite hymns is How Great Thou Art. Along with the reminder of God’s great kindness and mercy towards us, mention is made in this song of how nature itself sings His praises. One of the ways God communicates with me is through the breathtaking majesty of nature. From autumn leaves in my own backyard to Half Dome in Yosemite National Park, the fingerprints of Our Creator are evident. English missionary Stuart Hine visited the Carpathian Mountains, where he was inspired by a thunderstorm’s echoes to write the first verse. Later, as he walked through the forests of Romania, he heard birds singing, which inspired the second verse. Upon his return to Britain, he finished the work, adapting a Swedish folk melody to become the song we know today.

SCRIPTURE: The simple shout of praise in Psalm 104:1 needs very little explanation:

Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty. (KJV)

That’s really all there is to it. Honor. Majesty. Greatness. He is great and He loves us. That’s plenty and enough for me.

PRAYER: O Lord My God, my soul sings to thee. You are great beyond measure in Your love, kindness and goodness to me. From the beauty of Your creation to the fact that You breathed life into my lungs, I am amazed by You. Thank You for the gift of Your Son Jesus, who came to give me life everlasting, and in whose name I pray. AMEN.
